A landmark of avant-garde jazz and politically charged music, Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra is one of the most distinctive albums to emerge from the late 1960s jazz scene.

Originally recorded at Judson Hall in New York in April 1969 and released by Impulse! in 1970, this extraordinary session brought together an all-star ensemble featuring Don Cherry, Gato Barbieri, Dewey Redman, Roswell Rudd, Paul Motian, Carla Bley and others. Bley’s arrangements give the music its unmistakable orchestral character, moving between free jazz, folk traditions, protest music and deeply expressive ensemble playing.

The album includes the powerful Spanish Civil War sequence  “El Quinto Regimiento,” “Los Cuatro Generales” and “Viva La Quince Brigada” alongside Haden’s “Song for Ché” and “Circus ’68 ’69,” Ornette Coleman’s “War Orphans,” and a stirring rendition of “We Shall Overcome.”
