A fantastic piece of early-’80s British synth-pop, Heaven 17’s “(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang” is a record that perfectly captures the political edge and electronic experimentation of the era.
Released in 1981 on Virgin Records, this was Heaven 17’s debut single and the lead single from their classic album Penthouse and Pavement. The track was written by Glenn Gregory, Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware, with production credited to the British Electric Foundation (B.E.F.)
The record combines synth-pop, electro-funk, disco and new wave, creating a driving, futuristic sound that still feels remarkably fresh today. Its politically charged lyrics also attracted controversy at the time, with the BBC banning the song, reportedly because of concerns that it could be interpreted as libellous toward then US President Ronald Reagan.
