Herbie’s classic debut album. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on 28th May 1962.

Featuring a truly impressive quintet of Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Dexter Gordon (tenor), Butch Warren (bass) and Billy Higgins (drums). Rooted firmly in hard bop but also showcasing the exquisite ballad ‘Alone And I’. Features the all-time classic Herbie standard ‘Watermelon Man’, a top 100 pop hit for Herbie and #10 hit for Mongo Santamaria. Produced by Alfred Lion. The famous cover art was designed and photographed by Reid Miles.

In honor of Blue Note Records80th Anniversary, the legendary Jazz label is launching the Blue Note 80 Vinyl Reissue Series - curated by Don Was and Cem Kurosman featuring 180g vinyl releases with albums spanning the many eras of the label’s history presented by themes: Blue Note Debuts, Blue Grooves, Great Reid Miles Covers, Blue Note Live, and Blue Note Drummer Leaders.

The series launches May 10 with the reissue of 3 remarkable Blue Note debuts—Herbie Hancock Takin’ Off, Dexter Gordon Doin’ Allright, and Robert Glasper Canvas—and will continue with 3 albums released each month for the coming year.

The series will be all-analog whenever an analog source is available with Kevin Gray mastering directly from the original master tapes. The albums will be pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal in Germany.
