This record and band doesn’t need much of an introduction around these parts but when discussing the architectural foundations of the Bristol Sound, Massive Attack is the name that permanently anchors the conversation. 

While their 1991 debut Blue Lines rewrote the rulebook, it was their 1994 release Protection that solidified their status as masters of atmospheric, downtempo electronic music.

Released in 1994, Protection moved away from the raw, sample heavy hip hop beats of their debut and leaned heavily into lush, cinematic soundscapes. Working alongside producer Nellee Hooper, Massive Attack crafted a record that feels both deeply intimate and expansively atmospheric.
